How to Knit and Spin
Welcome to my Spinning 4 Pleasure website!
Do you want to learn how to knit and spin? On these pages you will find useful information including step-by-step instructions!
Hand spinning is the process of making fibrous material into yarn or thread.
When you are learning to spin it can be frustrating, but once you have developed your technique and learned to work with, rather than against your wheel, producing hand spun yarn is an utter joy!
Have you ever run your fingers through a newly sheared fleece and felt the smooth silky lanolin coating the fibres?
Do you love the look and feel of home spun wool?
Have you ever looked with interest at an old wheel or a drop spindle and wondered what it would be like to spin and knit your own yarn?
The sense of accomplishment is astonishing, and the physical actions of operating a wheel are almost hypnotic. Personally I find the process so soothing that I liken it to meditation!

This is a craft with a long history. Although, as we have emerged from the industrial age and are well into the knowledge or information age, it is hardly surprising that the craft is no longer considered as practical as it once was.
Hand spinning is no longer a necessity, women no longer spend the bulk of their time preparing yarn to make clothing their families, and little girls are no longer taught to spin. So if we no longer have to spin, why do so many of us still do it?
Simple.
For the sheer pleasure of it!
Of course, once you have spun your fleece wool into lovely new handspun yarn, you need to do something with it! Some spinners weave the wool into fabric, others use it to create wonderful craft items like tapestries and wall hangings. I prefer to knit my handspun wool!
My grandmother taught me how to knit and crochet when I was six, and I have been knitting ever since. I have knitted jumpers (jerseys if you are a Kiwi), soft toys for my children, baby blankets that have been in use for twenty or more years and much more.
Do you know how to knit?
Want to learn how?
Not only can learning how to knit and spin can be very rewarding, it can also save you quite a bit of money. Have you checked how much a 100% pure wool jumper costs these days? You might even be able to make a bit of extra money selling your knitted garments!
