Knitting Basics

If you have decided that you want to learn how to knit, it might be a good idea to check out the section on Knitting Basics for step by step instructions

Knitting basics covers casting on, casting off, knitting the two basic stitches, increasing and decreasing stitches and includes links to printable pdf's of each tutorial.

Patterns for Beginners

KnittingWhen you are just learning how to knit, it is a good idea to use basic knitting patterns and I would advise that you attempt a number small items to begin with.

Although it is tempting to start with a jumper or a baby blanket, as a beginner, your tension will take a while to settle down - and that takes practice.

If you begin with a large item you may find that you are really not satisfied with the finished article as it is likely to have tight bits, loose bits, and you may even find a dropped stitch or two!

Equipment Needs

Unless you are intending to go all out and buy everything you will ever need for all your knitting at once, your choice of pattern will determine what equipment you will need for your first project ot two.

Your pattern should list everything you need to make the article, including the yarn you need, knitting needles, and other accessories. Check the pattern carefully when you buy it and purchase the appropriate accessories.

Check out the Knitting Supplies page for more information on all of the knitting accessories that are available. Some of them will only be of interest to advanced knitters, but even a beginner will need a few items such as a basic collection of knitting needles, a row counter and pins for holding your work.

Knitting for Kids

By that I don't mean knitting garments for kids, but knitting projects that your kids can do as they are learning!

Projects that are suitable for kids include blanket squares, scarves or simple jumpers. If you are an adult beginner you might like to check some of these projects out as well - go on I won't tell anyone!
