Your choice of knitting patterns is one of the big decisions you have to make as a knitter.

Pattern Ratings

Most pattern publishers include a rating system so that knitters can determine which pattern is a better match for their current level of experience. The rating system will usually consist of a sectioned bar or balls of wool. The more bars that are colored in or the higher the number of wool balls, the harder the pattern is.

If you are a beginner it is best to look for a pattern with a low rating. It is not impossible for a beginner to make a more complicated garment, but why make things more difficult than they have to be.

How to Read a Pattern

One of the most difficult things to learn when you are a beginner is how to read a pattern. My daughter looked at one of my patterns yesterday and described it as 'gooble-de-gook'. I don't think that is a real word but it expresses her frustration quite well!
